Links for Week 11 of Busy Bee Kindergarten
You choose what you want to view from a list of links and descriptions
So as not to overwhelm you, I will send you fewer emails, but at least one email each week will have several links to different things you might want to read about or view. This way, you can stay apprised of everything that’s available to you but you won’t necessarily be “bothered” with anything you don’t currently have an interest in or don’t have time for. And, if you save your emails, you can access everything whenever it’s convenient for you.
The 10th Week of School - I’ll repeat the links here just in case you didn’t see them last week.
Video: Small Group Instruction and Other Centers Mid-October - See my small group instruction table every day for an entire week as well as what’s happening at the other centers. This video shows the I See My Classmates book being used (from Week 9 lesson plans) and why it’s such a great way to help teach voice-print match, which I want in place before we start reading fluency ladders and other decodable sentences.
Video: Introducing Read and Draw - Read and Draw is a pretty self-explanatory activity, but you might want to see how I introduce it to the students during small group instruction and how I ensure that it’s going to be a purposeful activity throughout the school year.
Video: Journal Writing 2nd Day and 4th Day - Get a sense of how to help upwards of 28 students while they all try to write “independently.” Pay particular attention to how I quickly circulate around the room and do not overly help any of the students. Developing independence is crucial.
Video: I Like… Sentence Stems - Once every week or two, I provide a sentence stem for journal writing time. See how this works and how it enhances fluency. You can read in the original post that you don’t want to do this too often because it will interfere with students’ confidence in coming up with their own sentences. You can also see examples of me using “Please stop” and counting to three—actually just to two because as soon as I got to two the student stopped—to manage a few behaviors.
Video: Introducing Fluency Ladders/Continuous Text during Small Group Instruction - This video shows how I introduce and teach my entire class how to start reading sentences with a mixture of heart words I’ve taught and CVC words to be decoded. Learn how to work with students of different ability levels at the same time, especially if you want to avoid ability grouping. Also, see how to let students read on their own at their own pace while still teaching everyone at the same time.
Week 11 of School - New Links and Descriptions
Video: Reviewing Student Work and SEL (Social Emotional Learning) - Occasionally take a few minutes to share and go over student work from the day. Bring in your SEL terms and concepts - Who stayed on task? Who was impulsive? Who is striving for accuracy? What tips can you give so students challenge themselves to do even better?
Video: Name Writing Interventions - You can include name writing in your intervention time if that is what students need (and I’m sure there are a few who do). I recommend using the letter formation cues, as you’ll see in the video.
Video: Small Group Instruction Mid-October - This is from two years ago, so you may see some things that are a little different. However, if you’re really wondering about small group instruction, you should get plenty of ideas in this 1.5 hour-long video.
Video: Number Corner - Listen to me talk about Number Corner (a component of the Bridges math program but changed up a bit by me) and the three main activities we do everyday.
Video: Read Aloud with Onomatopoeia - Every time I read a book to my class, I incorporate a focus lesson. Onomatopoeia is always a fun lesson and will really get your students listening for it during the book and all future read alouds.
Video: One of My Favorite Read Aloud Books - This is a tender story about the joy of helping others and the comforts of friendship. It is one of my top ten read aloud books and I love how quiet and captivated my students become when I read it.
That’s it for this week! Let me know if you have any questions!
