In April, we read and learn about caterpillars and butterflies. I have many read alouds on this topic. Our vocabulary includes metamorphosis, larva, pupa, chrysalis, and other related words. Of course, I buy caterpillars in a jar and we observe them as they eat, eat, eat, poop, poop, poop, grow, grow, grow, hang in Js, make their chrysalises, and change into butterflies. Our key text is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The students use picture cards to retell the story orally and then in writing. The video shows how students practice retelling a story with support, the support being the picture cards. I feel the students are at their peak in writing at this time of year and so I always dedicate this day to watching them write with no help whatsoever (other than the picture cards) so I can see what they can do, independently, with their writing. See them in action in the video as I circulate around the room and say practically nothing to them. They never cease to amaze me.
