It’s the 18th day of school and so far we’ve been, daily, drawing a picture and labeling it with just the beginning sound. Within the next week, we’ll start writing CVC words. I’ll teach the words the and a and we’ll move into writing two-word phrases that match our drawing, such as the cat or a map. Two-word phrases are a nice bridge between writing single words and short sentences. With two-word phrases, I teach that some words are “words we know” and we can just write them (the, a, and other heart words I teach) and other words require us to “listen to the sounds.” These are two categories of words we talk about all year. More on this later.

For now, watch the video and see what my students are doing at this point. My goal is to provide a video of whole group writing time at least once every two weeks; that way, you can watch my students coming along instead of—in future weeks and months—scratching your head and wondering how they got where they are.

Let me know if you have questions! Suggestions and ideas welcome also!
