One of my pet peeves is seeing second grade students who can’t write their name correctly. It’s like, what, none of the three (or more) teachers you’ve had bothered to teach you how to write your name? Or, didn’t care enough to expect you to actually write it legibly and correctly?
At this point in the school year, I am using my quiet time/intervention time primarily for letter-name interventions. During September, I was working with ten students but have now reduced that down to six based on some good progress. With just six to work with, there are some days when I have a few minutes remaining. And when I do, I grab one of the four students who are still sometimes writing their name illegibly. I work with them on managing their impulsivity—slowing down, thinking through the letter formation cues, and thinking about letter height. They are works in progress, but they are making progress.
