One of the Busy Bee Kindergarten subscribers contacted me and asked if I would make a video of the letter formation cues. I thought it was a fabulous idea!
Hopefully the video is a good addition to the written blog (linked above) and answers some questions. But if it happens to raise questions for you, just ask and I’ll get back to you promptly. I prefer questions and comments to be in the comment section (below) rather than emailed to me so that others can see them and read the responses as well. It saves me some time.
We work really hard on writing names during the first six weeks of school. We also introduce number formation 1-9 using number poems. I send both of these home to parents during the second week of school so that—as they realize we are working on name writing and might want to help out at home—they know how to help their children in a way that coincides with what we are doing at school. I also send a letter explaining what these are and that parents should KEEP THEM.
For those five or six who I can tell are going to struggle with learning to write their name, I put an attention-getting sticky note on the letter formation cues.
The person who contacted me about making the video said that her district is adopting these letter formation cues in lieu of using Handwriting without Tears. This makes me so happy. Not only do my cues empower students to control their pencil and write neatly, but they help students learn the letter names faster and pay more attention to details in all aspects of their learning.
