Video: Reading Decodable Books

Early December

This is the second time my kindergarten students have gotten the opportunity to read books. The first time was two weeks ago and I plan on doing this every other week, usually on Mondays.

You might think, weird, I wonder why she doesn’t have her students reading books every week. And every day, for that matter. The reason is because they have other important things to work on, the sorts of things that make book reading a possibility and a success.

From past videos, you probably know that those other important things are Read and Draw, phonemic awareness training, word list testing, Fluency Ladders, Continuous Texts, and practicing spelling and writing sentences. I have folders full of materials I’ve created for these activities and I keep right on making materials as different student needs arise.

Today I videoed just one group of students reading books. You’ll see in the video that they are much more confident with their reading than they were even two weeks ago. Some of them are reading the books so quickly already that I may have them skip some titles on my tracking sheet so they can get into more difficult books.

What I show in the video allows me to listen to/watch all of my students read at least one and up to four books all in one day.
