In this post, you will get a video of what my daily whole group phonics routine looks like at this point in the school year (week six). The routine includes:
1) the ABC song/pop-up game
2) letter and sound review (so far 13 letters and sounds have been taught)
3) the grandma story (how I teach the short e sound)
4) phonemic awareness training, which at this point includes beginning sounds, hearing vowels in the middle of words, and blending three phonemes presented by the teacher.
In the video, you will see me segment words and ask the students to blend them back together. This is blending; but I want to make sure you understand that it is phonemic awareness blending and not phonics blending. In phonemic awareness training, blending is an easier skill than segmenting. I will add segmenting into the routine in another week or so after the class gets better at blending. Blending with phonics (i.e., beginning reading) is, of course, a more demanding task than blending in phonemic awareness. And now for the video!
