Hi Randee

Does your writing routine/year plan etc still reflect what you wrote about in your book in 2008 or has it changed to reflect new learning based on The Science of Reading? Love all the stuff you put out and just curious if this book is still how you teach writing in your class. Thanks!

Wondering if there is somewhere linked to access the My Writing Journal checklist you use for each chilc? You use the dot or check to mark off, and it has the BeD on the side? It looks amazing, thanks!

Do you have the kids write independently or copy after you write sentence

We draw and write together for six weeks. After that it is “independent” with me circulating and teaching them individually by looking for teaching points in the writing they are doing right then.

I can't wait to see how you are currently tracking your students' writing goals!

Love the writing goals sheet! Thank you for making that topic your next post! Side story: I have been with my students for almost 9 weeks. Not long at all! My class is an inclusion class with little to no support thanks to the pandemic. The first week back, I allowed them to just write. As you can imagine, the results were not stellar. While trying to think of what to do to help these students, I revisited your Teaching Writing in Kindergarten Book. I decided it would be worth the time to start at the beginning, and we wrote and drew together everyday. We gradually went from labeling with beginning sounds, to beginning and ending sounds, to phrases, to simple sentences. I am soooooo happy to say that 7/10 of my students can now write simple sentences independently. This includes beginning the sentence with a capital letter, spaces, a period at the end, and using sounds to represent the beginning, middle, and end of words not on our word wall. I am beyond excited at their quick progress. One of these students knew 10 uppercase letters total 8 weeks ago, and now he is writing a correct sentence! One of my students, who is considered non-verbal and is struggling with letters and sounds, told me his sentence was "I see a dinosaur and a tiger." and his sentence started with a capital I and ended with a period. His picture also matched! Wow! Thank you so much for writing that book. I am sure your practices have changed some since the book was written, but I am amazed by the progress my students have made following your writing ideas. Thank you for sharing what you do with us. I am grateful!

Yes, wow, that is really good progress in such a short time. Thanks for sharing that story. You know, I have changed some of what I do in writing but to be honest there is a lot about teaching beginning writers that will always stay the same.
