I AM RESENDING THIS POST WITH THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE. Thank you to those readers who let me know that they were experiencing difficulty with the video.
In this video, you’ll see how I move students along in learning facts at their own pace. I have 26 number charts that they progress through, starting with just reading/naming numbers and then getting into facts/equations. My aide, Miss Lori, does Fast Fact Factory on Monday afternoons and I do it on Thursday afternoons. It is important that both of us stay aware of how the students are doing—if they are progressing through these charts at a steady pace and/or where they might be getting hung up. The charts are in a nice progression that automatically scaffold students into being successful with the next chart.
These charts, along with all sorts of other materials, are available with a paid subscription. You can sign up for a month or two, get the materials you need, and then—if by chance you do not think the subscription is worth the money—go back to your free subscription.
I had a nice conversation with my principal today about how important it is to teach students in their zone of proximal development (ZPD). Letting students progress through these charts at their own rate ensures that they are working on something that is in their current “zone.” Teaching in the zone moves students along and keeps them from misbehaving when work isn’t appropriate for them.
Great video! This really helps me understand your Fast Facts work with the kids. Have you done any videos of your teaching during number corner? I would love to see the teaching that supports this work!
I agree with your principal! You are a master teacher! Congratulations on the wonderful feedback from your principal. It’s nice when our admins acknowledge all the hard work we are doing!
