It was on my “to do” list to make a chart tonight (like the one you said wasn’t working). Thank you so much for sharing your journal cover. I think that will work great for me! Do you remove the cover and put it on their new journal or do you fill out a new cover for each journal? How do you know what their goal was when they get a new journal? Thank you for your help!
Good timing! The chart is cumbersome. I was putting a new journal cover on each new journal so that the parents could see what their students are working on and working toward. I kind of like your idea of keeping the same cover going for at least two or three journals. When I change to a new journal for a student, I was copying everything off the old journal cover onto the new one. You are welcome for the help and thank you for your questions and idea.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Do you provide your students with an alphabet chart on their journal? I’ve been reading your book and I’m getting ready to transition to the journals. I ran the cover you had in your book. I was thinking about putting the cover and goals back to back. I’d love any insight!
I have found over the years that the students tend to use the alphabet on the wall because we work with it every day during whole group phonics and they are more familiar with those picture cues and where to find each letter. So when I switched to the goal cover sheet, I did away with the alphabet on the cover sheet. I did, however, use it for 12 or more years. It would make sense to use it if you teach the kids those pictures and how to use that cover but not if you don’t.
Thank you for the feedback! These type of comments keep me going and putting in the hard work on top of a regular day of teaching. I’m glad you are finding it helpful.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you! I really enjoy your content. I tell my husband I want to be like you. Keep up the great work. I appreciate it!
