This year I am doing the drawings ahead of time and then putting a link to them in my weekly lesson plans, which I share with my paid subscribers every Sunday. The drawings I choose are mostly based on the phonics we’ll use for the labeling part. Right now we’re just practicing listening for the beginning sound and then writing it. The drawings are simple—bee, sun, cat, etc.—but some teachers like to see mine so they have a better idea what it should look like and what the kids can handle. The lesson plans also have links to videos showing things in action, like The Name Game, whole group phonics, pencil pick-ups, small group instruction, as well as links to all the materials I create and use. I hope you’ll do the daily drawing; the kids really learn to control their pencil and listen to and copy the teacher.

I would like to begin the 6 weeks of drawing and writing. Do you have a specific list of things you draw with the students?

Can you tell how you start the year with writing worshop? I need to know how to get them to this point where you start working on individual goals.

I start with six weeks of drawing and writing together, step-by-step, so that when I ask them to write “independently” they are used to listening to sounds and writing down the letters that go with the sounds. Then they grow at their own pace and I teach them on an individual basis.

Yes! That is what I’m planning on doing with my multi-week posts available with the paid subscription. I am going to take the time to photograph and video as much as I can in the classroom and then, after teaching a whole day, sit down and write about it and share with you so that you can see how I get the students going and get them to this point, starting from day one. I will be sharing a lot of other aspects of the classroom as well. I hope you are signed up to come along on the journey. I’m really looking forward to it.

Hello! I really appreciate the video! I would love to help my students create writing goals this year. How do you help them determine their goal? Also, what does your recording sheet look like to keep track of your notes?

Hi! Not too long after starting using this big goals chart, it became too cumbersome so I made a journal cover with similar info. It serves well as a tracking device for each student and I can jot notes on it, too, like “used to use periods but stopped when new goal added in.” Here’s a post on that: https://busybeekindergarten.substack.com/p/goal-checklist-journal-cover?r=dzflv&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&utm_source=copy
