Kindness Continuous Text

March, following kindness theme in February

My students are loving the continuous texts I create that relate to a recent weekly theme, topic of study, or book that we read. Examples include The Gingerbread Man, The Three Little Pigs, U.S.A., kindness, and opposites.

To reiterate, I like to make my own continuous text because I can ensure that they’re:

  1. instructive, meaning they include the phonics we’ve learned; the phonics that are appropriate for the different reading groups I’ll see; and, the heart words and other high frequency words that have been introduced and are practiced during whole group time.

  1. comprehensible, meaning that they make sense to students and they can derive meaning from them (too often, decodable books are not comprehensible).

  2. engaging, made all the more so with these fluency ladders and sentences that relate to a recent them or read aloud we did in class.

I made these following our kindness week in mid-February and our school-wide kindness month. Many students had just learned word list 9, which had the word kind on it.

The video shows me working with students in small groups at my reading table. I used the harder version of the above with my highest and second highest groups and the easier version with my two lower groups. I’ll include the YouTube version of the video also, just in case the embedded video does not cooperate for you.

And, just a reminder that all materials I create are available with your paid subscription. If it’s been a while since you got materials or you’re not sure your Google files are updating with the new items I add, just email me at missbusybeekindergarten@gmail.com and ask for something specific or “anything new I might like.” I’ll send you lots of goodies.

Hope you’re having a great weekend! Enjoy that time change and longer daylight!

P.S. There is now a Substack app for iPhones. I haven’t tried it yet, but it’s my understanding that you can keep all emails from me—and any other Substacks you read—all in one place. It might be worth checking out.
