Hi Julissa! It’s a conundrum when we teach students to read mainly by decoding and then assess them on their abilities to use the skills necessary for reading leveled texts. My district gave up that year-end assessment. Luckily. If it was still in place—as it is for you—I would teach my students these skills (how to look at the picture, how to listen to the language patterns, how to check the sounds in the long words to see if they match what you’re saying). I might spend 20% of my teaching time on this and 80% on real reading/decoding. I would also analyze and report (to parents, principal, and your school district if possible) a variety of assessment info, not just what level of text a student can read. In regards to your question on what comes after teaching letter names, I have documented two whole school years and will be sharing all of that again for the 2023-2024 school year. I have a complete phonics scope and sequence (with links to videos showing the different components in action) available to paying subscribers. Just email me and ask for it. Also, this summer we’ll be having planning sessions to help get ready for the upcoming school year.
Hi Iris, and thanks for your comment. I’m glad this topic was timely for you. What a sad state of affairs that we have to “figure out what to do with books” and especially books that we once loved because they were so accessible for our students. With strong foundational teaching, our students will be able to pick up and read most books, alleviating our concern as to whether a particular book might be “bad” for students at this particular time.
We received Geodes and will be using those and additional decodables. That being said, we still need to you F&P to level the kiddos. Do you have any tips? Also, you start the year with letters recognition and then....?
Congratulations on retiring. I have learned a lot from you.❤️
You must be on my same wavelength because for the first time this year I strictly used decodables and was thinking that I needed to go through my leveled texts to get rid of them. I was going to email you and ask how you did that and then I woke up this morning to a post from you on how to do just that!!! You are amazing! Thank you for all that you do for teachers and children!
